Makeda Peterson, program director for JuneteenthKC, shares how the annual Heritage Festival in Kansas City's historic jazz district celebrates unity and personal independence.

One of the few museums devoted to American jazz music lies in the Historic 18th and Vine district in Kansas City, Missouri. It shares the same building as the Negro League Baseball Museum. The Jazz Museum has lots of history on jazz legends including Louis Satchmo Armstrong and KC's own Charlie Parker. The museum, which opened in 1997 (celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022) is a Smithsonian affiliate.

I highly recommend visiting both, as you can get the combo price for admission. Besides what I showed you in the video, there are lots to see. Also part of the museum is the Blue Room club, which was designed to look retro and still has performances.

Philip Anthony Mitchell feels that he was radically brought into the Kingdom. Born in Queens, NY to Trinidadian parents, Philip found a sense of community and belonging in the streets, despite his mother and father starting a Christian ministry in the basement of their home.

Now the lead pastor of 2819 Church in Atlanta, Philip sits down with the Perrys for a conversation on the urban context and darkness of his childhood, how he was changed by prison, the idea of "calling," and the deep reverence and affection he now has for the Lord. He feels like he’s gotten a second chance at life, on the backside of a lot of pain and discipline, and he shares more of his story in this episode.
